It's hard to remember what life was like before the World Wide Web. I thought cell phones were amazing. And then, I thought the internet was amazing, but...now, wow, a cell phone is actually just a small computer with a phone app. Last September, I was in my hometown, Huron, SD, and walked by the old "The AT&T Building." In those days, the telephone was the same as AT&T. When I was a kid, you could look into the halls of that building and see the "Operators" working away, twirling wires, pushing and pulling plugs, and connecting the nation. I am not sure that we even have operators anymore. Probably...but I'm guessing I wouldn't be able to peek into a room and see them working.
The first shot is of an old fashioned switchboard that was in a company in Baltimore. The second shot is an "office phone" from the same period. How many of you had "party lines" when you were growing up? I did...what a challenge!
